Not a bad idea Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Only if the inner driver spins while the axle is, bill schultz ![]() |
I like it.
I'll have to put on helper springs for all of the tools & parts I carry. :-)
Checked the other lower control arm a few minutes ago. Can't see a crack (good thing) but can feel it with a fingernail. Hope the rain holds off.
The crack propagation on these aftermarket LCAs is a little different than the OEM arms.
When my OEM LCAs went, you could see from the rust pattern that the crack started in the center and went all the way through the metal of the web of the U-section of the arm, and that it stayed fairly stable for a long time before it propagated out to the flanges of the U-section. The crack pattern roughly follows the curved shape of A-arm shaft.
Now that I understand what I was hearing, the OEM LCA gave me a day's warning before it let go (a few unusual cracking sounds.)
The aftermarket LCA gave no warning at all.
The rust pattern on these aftermarket LCAs looks like the crack starts on the outside all the way along the weld and goes about 1/3 to half-way through the metal - it's roughly straight across the web of the arm, leaving only a few mm to each flange of the arm. It lets go with no warning.
It may be that the OEM LCA's welds weren't annealed to relieve the stresses in the metal created when the weld cools and shrinks.
The problems with the aftermarket LCAs may be a combination of a few things
- Poor welding technique that creates stress risers at the edges of the welds.
- Not annealing the arms to relieve weld stresses
- Thinner steel that doesn't have the same strength and fatigue characteristics of the OEM steel.
I'll post a few pics of the broken edges in a day or two.
