drivers floor was the worst. passenger front was also wet. drivers rear was also wet. passenger rear currently dry but rust marks...

The sponge in the drivers floor was soaked, but the upper sponge covering the drivers side firewall was only wet at the bottom, like it had wicked up. The fiberglass mat was dry, but rust stained (looked like water had wicked up), and there is significant rust in the tunnel underneath it... I'm not sure yet how much further I want to go. I think all these areas are pretty solid still for now, but I don't want to go into a massive rust repair project if I can avoid it!

The passengers side firewall sponge was soaked in thin oil in the corner next to the jetronic module, but no water really. The floor sponge was wet with water not oil. The oil could be rust proofing, if it somehow leaked through something in that area... the car gets sprayed annually and is a greasy mess, but of course the inside of the car does not get sprayed.

I do know the sunroof leaks a tiny bit (both our c900s have clogged drains that seem un-cloggable - I've tried extensively)... but the car has been stored in a garage for over a month now and those sponges are not drying, so I think even melting slush would produce that level of moisture accumulation.

as a side note, was the passenger side front seat supposed to remove the same as drivers side on a 1989 sedan (tilt and pull out)? Ours has bolts at the back and I'm wondering if that was a modification at some point in it's history?

I wouldn't say that I can rule out coolant still.

I probably need to get everything out of the interior and clean/dry remove loose rust and POR it all as a minimum...
