It seems pretty likely that the car has a 9000 flywheel. there is 30 degrees difference between the marks on the two flywheels and the car is supposed to be timed at 16 BTDC so depending on what mark is being seen in the light held at 45 degrees down the passenger side the timing may actually be right on. Are you guys using an adjustable timing light? If so what is the dial set on?
Since you have the flywheel cover off I'd recommend making a small mark on the flywheel when piston 1 is at TDC (as judged with a probe through the spark plug hole) then make a mark 16 degrees advanced of that. You can lay a piece of masking tape along the factory flywheel timing marks and transfer them to the tape then move the tape to coincide with your new TDC mark and make the 16 advanced mark. Remember that the flywheel rotates anti-clockwise when viewed from in front of the car (so does the distributor). So with the TDC mark straight up 16 advanced lays to the left (passenger side) of that mark on the flywheel. It would be interesting to know what that trick shows us.
