Replacing LH 2.4 ECU -- Using Later Models?

I have a 1989 non-turbo base 900. This model has the Bosch LH 2.4 Jetronic fuel injection system. I suspect the ECU might be malfunctioning. I'm not convinced this is why the car stopped running, but I should probably replace it anyway.
Besides the one in the car, I have two others, all of them the original one for the vehicle, Bosch -564. The one in the car failed with the check engine light on. The diagnostic switch won't operate the diagnostics. The spare I've been carrying, which I thought was good (I'm pretty sure I tested it) also won't operate the diagnostics. It also won't run the car, which is what leads me to believe that the ECU isn't the primary problem here. The third one was DOA when I got it and wouldn't run the car. However, its diagnostics run fine.
I still need to pressure-check the fuel manifold. I cracked the banjo fitting a bit and get some pretty good spraying with the pump jumpered on. Unfortunately, I don't have a fuel pressure gauge. A quick check of the local tool store's catalog hasn't convinced me they have the right fitting. Can anyone report if Harbor Freight's "Master Fuel Injection Pressure Test Kit" comes with what I need?
But, back to the ECU for a minute... It's been suggested I try an ECU from a later year.
How late can I go?
Should I stick to LH 2.4, or can I go to one with LH 2.4.2?
Should I avoid ones from turbos?
Can I use one from a 9000?
Thanks.
