Thank you all for your supportive comments! I'd rather not part it out yet, but clearly rust is starting to win... I'd love to weld it, but in addition to being a complete newbie at that with no tools, I wonder how long it would take for rust to set in again? presumably I'd have to cut back to all new metal no? can you weld to rusty steel?
RS, how long did the fibreglass job hold up in the '89? did it adhere pretty well? my previous hack job repair used bondo hair, which is really not great, but kind of worked ok... I ripped some of that off while digging into this mess.
If I try to fix it, I will have a lot of cleanup to do underneath! that thing is caked in grease already because it was regularly oil sprayed... I think the rust happened from the inside out in all of those places, which is kind of concerning. I will need to look more closely at our other car now also! One of the number 1 no-nos when building a house is to put 2 vapour barriers in a wall. Metal (the floor) is a vapour barrier, and I think the rubber upper surface of the underlay is also a vapour barrier (with a few gaps around it to let water into the sponge). those underlays were soaked but the carpet was dry and this was after a month sitting in the garage unused!
I'll probably try to get another year out of it... though with the interior stripped and the exhaust off, part of me thinks its more sensible to part it, and save my time and the brand new exhaust I've got for the other car... winter's a few months away, so I've got time to think about this I guess!
