about all the power for accessories being sourced through the ignition lock relay. When it's not energized, none of the accessories are powered.
Before firing up the '89 to come home, I pulled the relay. The car started up and idled normally. The windows, blinkers, radio, ventilation fan, and wipers didn't work. The brake light and fluid light on the instrument cluster were illuminated. When the relay was put back in, everything operated normally and those lights were off.
Believe me, I spent a lot of time looking at Bentley wiring diagrams over the last few days and that was what made the most sense when Keith posted the question.
Something is up with Keith's ignition lock relay. The big question is whether it's the relay itself or an intermittent open in the energizing circuit for the relay.
It wouldn't hurt to pry the relay open and look at the condition of the contacts and, if they're really pitted, clean them up with a point file.
