Yes, I knew the timing cover had to come off to get at the guides. I figured I could work all the bolts off without pulling the whole shebang...not that I'm looking for any more of a headache.

I'm concerned a new chain might unduly tear up those old mega mile guides. I mean, a new chain is surely going to have sharper edges vs the one that's been massaging itself against the original guides for 25yrs.

Just speculating...haven't gotten much past draining the oil yet.

One more thing I'm fretting over is the valve stem seals. I'll be taking the head to a machine shop for new exhaust manifold studs (one broken & another likely stripped)...but I'm nervous about having whatever place (yellow pages...new to the area) replace the stem seals. It's something you can't verify was done correctly unless you do it yourself...& I'm really going to have my hands full just getting the head off/back on before the car is needed again. A valve job (probably necessitating new guides) will push the cost factor too high...altho given that the exh manif studs all probably need replacement, I'm tempted to see if a local salvage yard has a decent 2.1 head needing a new home. There's a can of worms...merely researching the myriad of possible performance upgrades will take more time than I have. I was pretty well versed in that stuff some years ago...but time flies.

Any insight appreciated.
