Jack,
The chart is posted on Townsend's site I think. With just 1/2 dozen you could post the GMXXXX numbers here and I'll tell you what's what (or maybe someone will post the chart here). Be aware that when you start trying to mix and match parts and pieces between units it can get very tricky and many parts that appear the same absolutely will not transfer. Reverse idler and reverse mainshaft gears and front counter gears are good examples of that. Watershed points for major changes are 1988-1989 and 1990-1991 so most units up through '88 are "mostly" identical inside except for the change to internal centering (about 1986-7), '89 and '90 share most of their parts and many of the earlier parts and 1991> shares many parts with post '88 units but have major changes to internal shift control and the mainshaft stack. That's a very rough outline and you determine the years by decoding the GMXXXX number. Bear in mind that the front case is highly interchangeable and after two decades there are units out there with misleading GMXXXX numbers as a consequence of having their front case swapped. If you know the provenance of all your units you may be able to rule that nuisance out. One easy observation that may narrow down your decision tree is to remove the rear cover and check the condition of the ring and pinion gears. If they are shot then you know that unit is a parts donor and not a rebuilder. If you have six units with shot final drives you may have a lot of good pieces and parts but you can't make a unit. The final drive gears are essentially the limiting factor. Also, keep all the shims right where they originate and you'll minimize the tedious measuring needed when rebuilding a unit.
