I'm pretty sure Mobil 1 0W40 *European Formula* is still a real synthetic. That is the only stuff we use in the 9-5 because those cars are very sensitive to oil and prone to sludge. And we change it every 5000 miles or less.

I'm pretty sure the other Mobil 1's are a partial synthetic. I don't know if/when that changed, but I think that has been true for several years (based on the many discussions re this on the 9-5 bb)...

That said, I only run dino oil in our c900's and change it every 3k or less (usually much less, these are low mileage cars for us now). There may be benefits to running synthetic in the 900, particularly in cold start situations, but it probably is not really that important either so long as the oil is changed frequently. The c900 engine is very tough and hard to sludge up. Our Saab specialist indy has a very high mileage 1986 turbo (>600k) and he'd laugh at me if I decided to put synthetic in the c900's. He also has several high mileage 9-5 customers that use dino oil and have had no signs of sludge, but they religiously stick to short oil changes and the cars see lots of highway use. I would personally avoid dino oil in the 9-5 due to the known sludge risk, but his point that frequent changes are most important is well taken... and DIY, I can do 3 Castrol oil changes on a c900 for the price of a single mobil 1 change on the 9-5!

That said, if you want to run Mobil 1, I wouldn't worry too much about leaks. Worst case you could switch back.

One other trick: the PT Cruiser filter is the same size as for the Saabs, and the PT Cruiser Turbo takes a larger filter, so more surface area for filtering... and it has the same thread and diameter - just a little longer than the one specified for saab... but there is more than enough room to use it, and so I do in the 9-5 (as do many others, because, again, the 9-5 engine benefits from anything that leads to cleaner oil). The filter costs exactly the same as the shorter/standard one. In Mobil 1 speak, the part number for this filter is 209. I don't bother to use it in the c900's (only because of local availability of that size in cheaper filters, eg Mann vs overpriced Mobil 1) but there is more room in the c900 for the filter than in the 9-5. I really need to find a good deal to buy these by the case.

Where does the oil leak from the Subie? Might be worth checking. Do the 2006 foresters still have the hg issues that all the old ones had? Hopefully the leaking will just go away when you go back to castrol.
