are you up on your maintenance? Posted by Snowmobile [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Would you take your 900 "Into the Wild"?, Paul D, Fri, 6 Sep 2013 19:33:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If the car is very well sorted and you have tools and a few key spare parts, and it is not an automatic and you don't have children with you or any other sort of high commitment scheduling requirements... sure, go for it!
I normally travel with kids now so I wouldn't risk a trip like that in a c900, that's why we got the 9-5... but realistically, if something broke on the 9-5 (which is now almost 10 years old, so occasionally stuff does break), I'd probably have more trouble fixing it as more parts are saab specific (the c900 is full of commonly available bosch parts - much cheaper and easier to find bosch cap/rotor etc in the wild than a DIC!).
That said, if you are asking, maybe you should consider the condition (ie when were they last replaced?) of the coolant hoses etc. The top ones in particular can go and if they are original should be replaced (or at least carry spares - they are cheap, small, and light). Also check the one behind the starter - that can rub against a bolt on a bracket and make a hole! T-stat should be recent, and radiator up to snuff. Make sure your battery is fresh, battery cables also! If they are original, they are probably overdue to be replaced (look for cracked insulation along the whole length and any cable corrosion). I'd pull up the carpets on the drivers side and inspect the brake lines for corrosion and leaks (also elsewhere - eg at the rear axle, at wheels). That's a lousy thing to have go in the middle of nowhere. And also fuel pump - is that original? If the tranny runs well now, I wouldn't worry too much. I once drove an aging (known failing) autobox halfway across the continent with no problems. Bring along some mechanics wire in case an exhaust hanger breaks (happened to me many times!)...
The most risk-free approach would be to rent something. Would keep the miles off your c900. But it's going to be a more fun trip driving the c900!
