Re:Learn to shift without using the pedal! Posted by bill schultz [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: clutch hydraulics hot weather, RS ![]() ![]() |
Hey Y'All. You need to learn how to shift without using the clutch pedal. It's really easy, doesn't hurt anything, and I've HAD to do it with many of the cars I've owned and worked on because the hydraulics will fail on every SAAB at some time. (MC,slave, and hose) The hardest trick to learn is taking off from a dead stop. (Red light, reversing, etc)[ Key OFF. To go; select 1st gear-start engine (give it lots of gas 'til you get rolling)(lots of jerks and anxiety,-accelerate to 4000 RPM,take right foot off accel. pedal and at the same time shift into neutral with fingertips maintaining light pressure on shift lever for getting 2nd gear when engine RPM naturally drops to match transmission RPM for 2nd. At that moment the shift lever will magically engage 2nd with NO grinding. Then repeat to 4000 RPM through all the gears. Guess what?! Up shifting is easy too. If you're in 5th etc. shift into neutral, blip engine up to about 2000 RPM higher than lower gear and put fingertip pressure on shift lever to the next lower gear take right foot off accel. and when both RPM match you are again magically in the lower gear. Pros can go from 5th to 1st with NO problem if you're MPH is quite low. (10- 15) Plan ahead for red lights, stop signs, grid lock, and be ready to be in neutral if you have to stop. Turn key on, start and go. This works for reverse too. When I demon straight this to people as "insurance" for them down the road they are awestruck and tickled pink. They hardly ever remember what to do so I get a lot of callbacks when it happens so I guide them through it on their cell. Practice makes perfect and you'll finish the race. No autoboxes for me. Bill (P.S. Since Saabs have dual diagonal braking systems one can safely drive cross country if you know that if you "Push the brake pedal through the floor" the car WILL stop, more slowly than usual but still safely. I came back all the way from Tallahassee to New Orleans in my 1st 2 stroke. Have a ball with all this.Think about it! It's like the Porsche sequential shifters but a lot slower.
