Better get it out sooner than later. The more it sloshes around in the tank, the less likely you'll be able to fish it out. If you are lucky, the coil is still attached to the cap and you can just pull it up with that. You will have to re-solder the connections, and then put the whole shebang back together before you can secure the canister to the cap. Upon reassembly, be sure that the two rods inside that the float rides on are parallel to each other. If you twist the canister askew when installing it on the cap, the two rods will helix and the float can get stuck.
To get the sender out of the tank, make one of these tools with a 1.5"-2" PVC reducer. Put it on top of the sender retainer, mark the ridges, and file groves there to engage the retainer. Works like a charm.
