'Clean' way to clean engine bay ???

Several of my Saabs, high miles all, seriously need engine bay cleaning.
Specifically the dirt oil combo in the lower areas and driveshaft tunnels.
I live in a semi-rural area, gravel driveway and parking areas.
I don't want to create gross 'spill' zones.
Seems best would be to go to a self serve car wash and use a degreaser followed by hot soapy water and then rinse - assuming they have separators to keep the gunk out of the environment ?
