5 speed conversion complete - 5th gear engagement? Posted by DET17 [Email] (#1254) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DET17) on Mon, 23 Sep 2013 03:54:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm nearing the end of the long LONG project (7 months from hood off to engine restart) and just last night thought I would trying stirring the 5 speed thru the gears.
5 speed donor was an 87T, now in residence in my 91 T. I did NOT make any adjustment at the shifter shaft coupling when moving all the parts from car to car. This system is the early style round / cylindrical shifter coupling, which is hard as a rock but unbroken. Oh yes, this 5 speed was rebuilt by yours truly back in 2004....the full Monte of bearings, springs, a "better" reverse gear,
Well the good news - 1st 4 gears shift smoothly (car sitting on jack stands, sans wheels/tires). However 5th doesn't seem to want to engage. It sounds like it is on "the edge" of meshing, and if you let go of the shifter it grumbles. One try it did engage, but then pops out.
I've got new 10W30 in the gearbox; waiting to run about 200 miles and then drain & convert to the Redline MTL.
I'm sure hoping I've got the shifter shaft adjusted wrong in the new car. Just back from a week's fishing trip - did not yet read the Bentley for shifter adjustment.
Suggestions? C.Myles, got your ears on?
Thanks.
