Yep, it's extremely likely that it's only a matter of adjusting the coupling. Use the technique specified in the service manual with two pins but from your description it sounds like the shaft from the shift lever (in the passenger compartment) needs to be inserted farther into the coupling. The couplings sometimes develop a ring of corrosion inside that prevents the shaft from being inserted farther so you may need to deal with that.
