Thanks. I ungummed the cylinder so replacement avoided, for now but my local locksmith, who has turned out to be a real decent honest guy through all this basically went ahead and off his own back researched it and came to basically same conclusion as what you say except he thought plastic console would have to be lifted. I was told this simple route would only work if the key could still be turned. I think that was because the pin could then be depressed but if cylinder was jammed and key could not turn then pin is locked out, so then it is seat out, console out and the housing with gear stick, reverse lock out and ignition would have to be removed
