I've seen guys drop a T37 out the bottom of a C900 but I would never do it that way. The smart money says install a good five speed manual transaxle and the real smart money says install a freshly rebuilt one so you don't have to mess with it again (for like 150,000 miles anyway). As you've seen (whether a T37 or five speed) it pays to have it rebuilt by the right guy. I rebuilt probably a few hundred T37s in the nineties and can tell you that very few rebuilders can do it really right. I used to get weekly visits from trans shop guys that told a customer they could rebuild their T37 because it said they could in their franchise handbook, but they couldn't. It's a finicky little devil to rebuild and totally obsolete in more than one sense of the word. If you are gonna do the five speed swap save yourself a million headaches and get a parts car then get the five speed rebuilt and install it. That way you have every tiny piece you'll need and there are quite a few. The best donors (in my opinion) are from 1987 and up. Any C900 with external shift centering is a good pick. Good luck!
