For the muffler hangers, I use a floor jack, placed under the attachment hook on the muffler, to gently bring the muffler up to the point that the top of the rubber hanger can be easily pried onto the attachment hook on the car. Put the hanger on the hook on the muffler before using the jack.
I've also put the jack under the muffler, using a piece of wood to spread the upward force of the jack over a wider area. That might be OK with a new muffler, but I'd be concerned about doing that with an old muffler with a lot of internal rust, lest it be crushed.
