where 'it' is most probably (*) either one or another nut on the back of the clocks or the bigger nut under the dash where lots of black wires (**) come to.

Steve,
It all goes in terms of probability and theoretical frequency and I gave you the causes off the top of statistics (and some common sense). If you'd prefer to make it the saab way - and everybody knows that saabers are smart asses - you've got to study electrical diagrams paying attention on what's common for the temperature and fuel gauges and then tracing wires with a voltmeter. C900 manuals off R. Bentley Publishers have good electrical diagrams and very nice intro whenever it's 8V 1980-1988 manual or 16 1986-1993 one. They aren't that pricey and make a good look on the shelf.
(**)
Is it still ok for the Elves to call black wire a black wire?
