And I'm sure it's the valve stem seals. Haven't figured it out it's so rare, but it's always after overnight sitting and seems to usually be when humidity is high. Most of the time I don't see or smell anything, but when it occurs it's very embarrassing.

I plan some nice summer day to pull cams and use air pressure to hold the valves up while I compress the springs, take all apart, and install new seals. But it's lots of work, there are 16 of them after all, all deep down in wells, and hard to do right. I might just wait till the car shows signs of needing a head gasket and get a machine shop to do them then.

It takes long sitting for enough oil to seep down the valve stems to show up in the exhaust, and if the catalytic converter is warmed up that would take care of the oil smoke so you wouldn't see it much even if oil somehow got down into cylinders.
