Reconditioned head FYI Posted by Cmyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: My smoking, Saabath89 ![]() |
Be very careful to not release your original cylinder head to anyone. There are some really evil "cylinder head rebuilders" out there and I've seen their handiwork. They will take a head that is radically warped and mill the mating surface until it is flat, no matter how much metal removal that requires. Of course the mating surface is flat but the rest of the head, like where the cams lie, is still warped so the head is essentially ruined and useless. Those cam shafts don't like being flexed. Right now you have a head that may just need valve seals but probably isn't warped or otherwise seriously hurt. If you turn it in as a core when you get the "reconditioned" one it's gone and you won't be able to get it back even if you succeed in getting a refund. Better to pay the core charge and put your old head on a shelf for future contingencies. The worst "rebuild" I've seen came from a giant corporation that handles a lot of cylinder heads and sells "international(ly)". I called them and was put on the phone with a shop foreman who very obviously had no idea how a sixteen valve cylinder head worked or how to make a warped head useful again. He also told me a direct lie about something they did to the head in question. After milling the mating surface (a lot) they milled the top surface (a lot) so after replacing the distributor securing cap (backwards) the distributor could not be inserted into the bore. He adamantly told me that they never remove those and I must be mistaken. Those details were extreme enough that I noticed them before I ever got the head near the car but it was still a major PIA just dealing with them.
Good used parts (including cylinder heads) for our C900s are getting scarcer by the day so when an outfit destroys an otherwise repairable part we get screwed twice. Hang on to that head, you (or some other C900 enthusiast) may be really glad you did. Furthermore, if you have the skill and patience to do a cylinder head R and R you have the skill and patience to replace the valve seals. It's pretty easy and the seals are dirt cheap. There are lots of guys on this board that will be willing to provide the guidance if you decide to go that route.
