Actually, regardless of what version of C900 five speed you have you are supposed to use a pin in both locations. The transmission internal detent does tend to properly locate the shift rod (the rod that enters the transmission) when in third gear but there is a chance of dislocating that rod when you lock down the coupling and the second pin will prevent that.

Fifth gear is subject to a few special problems. The nut that maintains the gear stack on the mainshaft dwells in the fifth gear hub and if that nut comes loose it can cause fifth gear problems (for starters). The fifth gear hub and that nut are also very close to the rear end of the input shaft (because when fifth gear is engaged it locks the input shaft to the mainshaft). When slop develops in the mainshaft stack, often the result of badly worn pinion bearings, the fifth gear hub and input shaft make contact and the hub and fifth synchro assembly are ground down until bad things happen. That process can initially manifest itself as difficult shifting of fifth gear.
