Vern -- I'll chime here as there is something that needs to be said about the rigging procedure.
Step 1 - loosen the coupling.
Pinning -- in your 1991, you pin both the shifter shaft AND the gear selector shaft that goes into the gearbox. That means it will be firmly into third gear. The special L shaped tool is 5 bucks from Tallifiero or however it's speeled.
You can do it without pinning the gearbox selector shaft, but only if you can be 100% sure that it's completely in third. ( AND it stays there when tightening the coupling )
ALSO, it helps to have the car on a lift that supports all the wheels instead of on the chassis frame that flexes or bows the car ( ie when the doors don't shut properly on jack stands ) as that changes the relative distance between the shift shafts / coupling interface. If you can tighten the coupling while all four feet are on the ground, it might help to keep the relative distance upon tightening the coupling in compliance when driving and shifting.
As always, good, solid motor mounts are key to this as well.
OK -- so, given all that is correct, and you still have a cool down/gear engagement issue, then you have a late 1990 gearbox in your 1991 that has the incorrect centerline drilled in the shift shaft/gearbox case. Cmyles pointed out this problem in past posts, and I've seen it in person with him.
Not sure if there was a service bulletin on this or not, but if you have one of the affected gearboxes, the only solution might be to take it apart and correct the offset error on the machining, or replace the gearbox entirely. NOT one of my favorite solutions......
