Been using the valve stem-in-a-spare-cap approach for years. The bike pump only needs a few psi to blow the bubbles out. I carry that cap on road trips.
Helped a friend swap 5 speeds last week. He started the job while I was out of town. Didn't get chance to loan him the pressure plate spacing tool. He just disconnected the hose from the slave when he pulled the drive train. When we hooked the system back up he left the bleeder valve out of the slave until it dribbled fluid. Put the valve back in and bleed it like a brake job. A couple pumps and the pedal was back to full pressure. Never got to use the valve-in-spare-cap technique.
