Hello Saabsters

Well I went and done did it! Got a ride 5 hours south to go check out the car I posted about last week...and when I first saw it, my heart sank. Cosmetically, just a mess. The pictures he had posted did not do justice to how crappy it looks inside. Not only the ripped and totally ragged top, which I knew about, but just dirty everywhere. And dismantled inside: the center console all in little plastic parts tossed into the back seat, the well under the top cut because the guy lost the key to the trunk and cut through the vinyl, pushed and broke the board under it in the top of the trunk, so he could reach through and unhook the latch. Window sealing strips barely hanging on. Basically every project he tried to do, bless him, left unfinished and in pieces. Usually shitty interiors mean shitty upkeep in general in an old car, right? Well, I came this far I thought, might as well drive the thing...

Wow!

As janky as the interior got, the man had the good sense to not take on mechanical issues himself and spent a shit ton of $$$ at the local saab shop (including the rebuilt 5 speed 10K ago!), and the car drives tight and great! Steering, shifting, stopping, accelerating...what a rush! So fun, I MISSED that. And he was reasonable, he let me have it for $800. Razor straight body. Good bones. Now its time to clean her up.

So, I really want to figure out how to fix things myself, treat this as a hobby, I don't have the $ to get a shop to do it all anyway. Take on one project at a time, take my time. I'm a little mechanical, but often I just don't understand the lingo of what people suggest on this and other sights...it often seems like gearheads talking to other gearheads and I'm just not picking it up. Any tips for me on how to learn this stuff? I gather that the Bentley manual seems to be the base line Saab bible...is that beginner friendly? I've used Haynes manuals waay back, and they were at least a little bit talking to the beginner mechanic...I just figure, if I take my time, and can understand just what the heck instructions are talking about, and if I secure the right tools, I could do lots of stuff myself...

One of the first things I want to do is finish the drivers seat re-skinning...as it is, it looks like a used condom hanging over bulging out foam. The question is, how to do it right? Also, any suggestions on the best product for leather cleaning and conditioning?

Many more posts to come, I am sure. Thanks in advance.
