CBS - - I don't think there's any reason to worry about turning the motor in either direction.

I've stuck a big screwdriver in a flywheel tooth and pushed it to get quite a bit of movement. Wear gloves cause when it gets as far as it will go and jumps out you'll smash your hand on the flywheel teeth.

Compression is a big problem, a lot to fight. If you want, go ahead and pull the plugs, then you'll only have friction and valve springs to fight against. It should move much easier.

With pressure plate bolts still in, you can put a wrench on one of those and get a lot of movement, then jump to another one. Of course, since you're rotating it to remove those very bolts this will only help so far.

As to the nuts to use I said 1/2" because I know that works. Smaller, I doubt. Larger has the risk of over compressing the pressure plate but I wasn't aware the special holding tool could go in too far. I think one size bigger will be okay, and I think lug nuts will be way too tall.

!/2"-13tpi nuts are pretty cheap at my local hardware store. Your problem may be getting there to buy them? I understand your car is broken.
