You need a decent vacuum Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Tue, 8 Jul 2014 13:12:50 In Reply to: Re: Crimped hose ends, CBS [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 8 Jul 2014 13:00:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You need to pull around 30" of vacuum for at least an hour to get rid of air and moisture. I would pump down for several hours if you're leaving the old drier in. No way you're going to do that with a mighty vac. If you have a decent shop air compressor the cheapest way would be to buy an air operated vacuum pump. (Aside from trash-picking an old air conditioner compressor to make a pump with.)
If you don't have one you'll also want a gauge set to watch the pressures as you charge the system. In fact that's the first thing to check when you have a problem as the pressures let you know what's going on inside.
Do the job right and you probably won't have to touch it again for a long time. I repaired the AC in my C900 when I bought the car in 2002 and it still practically blows ice cubes out of the vents in the hottest weather. It has not even needed to have the refrigerant topped up in that time.
