I think I'll work a little harder at trying to figure things out myself before I bug y'all next time :) this whole hood thing was disturbing my peace so at midnight I went out to my driveway with my toolkit and headlamp and found that I could, with much patience and fumbling, get a 10mm wrench on the nut that holds the U shaped slider-guide back towards the windshield on the 'sardine can lid' passenger side. This nut was just below the arrow looking phallic thing that is supposed to go into a hole on the firewall side, but instead was jammed on top of said hole which was holding the hood up and askew. Removing the nut, bolt, and U-guide allowed me to wiggle and lower the hood just a little bit closer to where it is supposed to rest (down), and the next time I tried my hood latch the front popped open. Hooray! Still not sure why it went off track in the first place, but I'll be closing it carefully from now on.
