It probably has an electric water pump - that was a thing a few years back when b-motor parts became very scarce. I have read there are some longevity issues with those early EWPs, so maybe the temperature spikes are a result of it not keeping up.
If the car is clean, I wouldn't let the b-motor get in your way. You either fix it or you don't, and if you don't it's hardly awful to swap in an 8v or 16v h-motor - especially the 8v. The transmission could be a roadblock, but in this day and age you're not going to find a needs-nothing c900 for a grand, so it might very well be worth the risk. Lessening the reliability risk starts costing real money, real fast. ;)
