Justin speaks wise words, and I didn't mean to frighten you. The costly aspect is one thing, but the parts availability for the old 8v engines ( like fuel system parts ) is really difficult. Changing it to later model engine/powerplant is a wise thing.
For example on the fuel system, we had to use a Volvo fuel accumulator, so the body didn't fit, nor the fuel line connections. The fuel pumps are expensive, and hard to find, and the attachments to the fuel pumps are NLA. So, all the rotten rubber is not easily replaceable and you have to start thinking about putting in a different fuel tank to get the pump to match. The 1980 pump is a very high pressure pump in comparison to the LH2.2 or 2.4, so there is that to deal with as well. It just doesn't seem to end....
Best of luck!
