Robert,
Without seeing a picture I can say with about 98% certainty, based on your description, that that is part of the internal detent mechanism for the manual valve. The manual valve sets the gear range (P R D N 1 or 2) by directing ATF under pressure to the appropriate valves in the valve body. Those valves then move and apply or release the appropriate clutches to activate the gear train as desired. The gear shift lever also has a detent mechanism and you are currently selecting gears (and positioning the manual valve) using only that detent mechanism. The redundant detent mechanisms is a puzzle, I don't know of any car other than the C900 Saab that has redundant detent but in your case it has shown to be a useful quirk. When installing a rebuilt or used replacement transmission in these cars it is important to synchronize the two detent mechanisms by adjusting the shift lever detent to "mirror" the internal detent (the one you no longer have) because the internal detent is the precise one but the shift lever detent is the stronger one and can over-ride the internal mechanism and position the manual valve improperly. The driver may not notice the error but the gears in the unit will be wrecked pretty quickly (THEN you'll notice it). That means it's important that you repair the internal detent ASAP and make the adjustment to synchronize the two detents.

You will need to remove the valve body to replace that broken part and it must be carefully adjusted after re-fitting. Get a service manual that shows the valve body R & R and detent adjustment and read it thoroughly before you dive in, it's a crappy job as you must work under the car, lifting and holding small pieces in place while ATF is constantly dripping in your face. I've never seen one of those detent arms break but fortunately for you all T37s use exactly the same part there so anyone with a junked T37 can provide one.

It's held to the valve body with two screws BUT those screws thread into nuts on top the valve body so I can't imagine doing the detent R & R without removing the valve body. I don't think there's any way to reach the two square nuts with it in place and I don't think you can properly adjust it that way either (but there's a first time for everything).
