Sounds like you are dumping raw gas into the exhaust and that usually happens because a fuel injector is not closing or the pressure regulator is defective or, more likely in your case, one or more spark plugs are not firing when they should. So you probably have an ignition system problem and the main suspect would be the crank position sensor. Check to make sure it's attached securely then check for a loose electrical connection or damaged wire, otherwise the sensor itself may be on the way out. Also check the spark plug wires and plugs. You need to have the correct NGK plugs in there and good (preferably Bougicord brand) wires. Run it in the dark and mist some water on the plug wires and see there is evidence of them shorting to ground. You should always be able to get a smooth, consistent flash from your timing light on a single mark. Erratic or wandering flash means something is badly wrong.
