charging issues still after alternator swap? Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Sat, 2 Jul 2016 18:49:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm puzzled on this one. 1993 900s. The car starts fine, drives fine with throttle, but at eg a stop sign, it seems to fade like there is a charging issue. Sometimes the "battery" (charging) light fades on, sometimes the green dash lighting fades out (possibly a separate issue)... speedo is slow to click up from 0 to actual speed (jumps)...
I measured 12.0V across the battery, battery + to block, and alternator + to block, all the same while the car is running. Battery had discharged from 12.75 to 12.5 just going around the block! Basically the same behaviour with the new alternator as the old one... Prior to the alternator swap, I was measuring a bit over 11V at all points including across the alt, so there's a bit of improvement (and a huge improvement in alternator vibration with the new bushings!), but something is still wrong.
I'm going to swap batteries with our other c900 and see if that helps, though I'm pretty sure that was the first thing I did, back in the fall when this first occurred (we put this car away for winter, so it sat in that state over winter, topping up the battery periodically).
As part of the alternator swap, I put in a brand new second alternator ground (old one was a little cruddy - everything gets like that in the snowbelt). Also replaced all belts.
Besides battery (will swap tomorrow), any other thoughts? Can a bad charging light bulb do this? That could be original in this car...
