How are you making out?
I was organizing and found my Haynes repair manual for 1979 - 1988, and I thought of you. This is what I used back in the 90s when I had my 1985 8-valve.
There's a section on diagnosing the "Electronic ignition System with Hall transmitter", the type you should have. The Ignition Control Unit on the left-hand side of the engine compartment looks like the following, but this is a new unit. It will look similar. The important part is it has 7 connectors.
When it talks about turning the engine, it means turn it by hand, using a wrench on the crankshaft pulley. "Righty-tighty" -- the engine turns counter-clockwise when viewed from the front of the car.
From the book...
12. Locate the control unit on the left-hand side of the engine compartment. Remove the mounting bolt and turn the unit around the earthed bolt until the fuse is visible. Pull back the rubber cover (do not remove the fuse) and connect a voltmeter between terminals 4 and 2. If battery voltage is not available with the ignition switched on, check the ignition switch wiring.
13. Disconnect the wiring from the distributor and check that battery voltage is available with the ignition switched on. If not, check the wiring.
14. Connect a voltmeter between terminals 6 and 3 on the control unit, leaving the fuse connected. Remove the distributor cap and dust cover, then turn the engine until one of the gaps in the slotted rotor is aligned with the Hall transmitter. The voltage reading should be 0.4 volt or less. Now turn the engine so that the rotor covers the transmitter. The voltage reading should be 1.0 volt or more. If the voltage is incorrect renew the transmitter unit.
15. Disconnect the distributor wiring and connect a voltmeter across terminals 15 and 1 on the coil. When the ignition is turned on the reading should be 6 volt dropping to zero volt within 1 to 2 seconds. If not, renew the control unit.
