Had hoped to spend more time going through the car this weekend but got sidetracked on other projects. I did get the oil/filter changed, and removed the air filter. Air filter needs to be replaced for sure.
As is my habit, I started cleaning in the area that I was working in. After removing the air filter housing and cleaning up those components I noticed that it was quite oily/gunky under the air filter housing. I'm not sure where the oil came from but it was somewhat reminiscent of the mess you get from a leaking A/C fitting. Managed to get that all cleaned up and then started cleaning various surfaces in the engine compartment that were coated with that nasty limestone dust that is typical of those Midwest gravel roads.
Getting the engine compartment tidied up can be a laborious, tedious and long process but in my opinion is worth it in the long run. The underside is pretty oily so I decided to tackle that another time.
I did discover that you cannot just pop down the the local parts store and expect to get what you need. Understandable I suppose, being that the car is 25+ years old. Looks like a little planning ahead will be necessary.
