1993 900 S starting problem.

My 93 S has developed a crazy starting thing.
It seems to be a wet weather thing. Some days it fires first crank and will be fine for days. Sometimes it starts hard and wants to die when you let off the gas and smells rich.but if kept running and you drive off but rev it at the first few stops it will clear up and be fine for the entire drive cycle even if its 12 hours.
Then all of a sudden it will just not star at all.just cranks about 5 or 6 seconds backfires and then when you let of the key it sputters like the timing is way off.changed cap rotor and plugs .when it won't start it has spark fuel pressure is fine .just cranks backfires then let off the key and sputter. Haven't changed the crank sensor only because it never has any problem once it starts no hesitation nothing never stalls runs perfect.
An hour later or maybe the next day.its like it never had a problem. Runs great good power normal gas mileage.
As long as the engine has started and is running fine and still warm from that drive cycle it never has a problem .but let it cool completely off and its 50/50 whether you get a perfect start or crank and backfire and sputter at key release.
It really seems like a timing thing .I have been leaning towards the ezk box.checked all the connections and everything is clean and dry.
Sorry for such a wordy explanation but its a weird situation that is hard to describe in a few words.
Any thoughts would be welcome .I'm kind of stummped.
