Seems maybe that the shifter coupling is damaged. It looks like my 1988 has the older shift coupling, that looks like this:

I can't find these anywhere. I searched online some and read that the later dog-bone style can be used instead, these look like this:

Still no luck finding a new one, but maybe I can find a used one and then just replace the rubber part,
