Phil,
I'm not certain that you don't have something going seriously wrong with your tranny, but something you might try adjusting yourself is the reverse lockout pin on the shifter. It's easy to do and it MIGHT be the cause of your trouble.
If you click above on the "More from Monster" logo and then go to my "Shifter fix" post, you'll see the whole procedure. I just did it on my car a couple of days ago and my 5th gear now engages much more smoothly. Hopefully, that's all that's wrong with yours!
