Phil,
This is the later stage of transmission failure. You should have been
warned by
the whining pinion bearings.
(which, now that he mentions it, I think I have been hearing)
Thanks,

Thanks for responding Tom. Although I'll have to admit that I expected a
diagnosis such as this...I still held out some hope.
Have any advice for someone in my position? Is rebuilding an option? Do I
attempt a rebuild on my own (I'm not a master mechanic but I do have a bit
of experience and plenty of tools)? Or do I pick-up a used/rebuilt tranny?
Thanks for you advice!
With you permission, I would like to take your original response and put it
out to the Classic 900 BB so that there will some closure to the thread.
Thanks again,
phil

Hello phill,
Permission granted. Sometimes replacing the transmission with a used one is a definite savings. Other times its a disaster. Its good to be able to replace it with a KNOWN good trans from someone who knows and you can trust. If your 900 is in good shape ....you may want to invest back into it and put a Factory Rebuilt in. Do all the rubber parts and engine seals at the same time. The engines last so long that I cant get a fix on a failure rate!
You may have to invest $2500.00 and time. In my book that's cheap for a safe 100,000 miles or better.
Go to the url and enter "transmission extra" for a idea of parts that I
usually replace when the transmission is being replaced.

Good luck
