front brake pad clearance

help! I'm trying to replace front brake pads on a 87 900. I've removed the calipers, spun the piston and pushed it in to caliper housing. however upon re-assembly, I don't have clearance to fit the new outer pad. if I spin the piston counter clockwise as suggested in the repair manual I lose clearance for the inner pad and don't really gain any more "space" for the outer pad. any suggestions? thanks, Norm.
