Hi, Steve!
The instructions that came with my AID said it would allow "3 to 6" degrees of additional initial advance. Since stock setting is 16 degrees BTDC, I tested my Beastie at 19, 20, 21, and 22. Initially, it seemed to me that the best results were at 20 degrees. But after I did some other mods (wastegate actuator, hooter, etc.) =AND= found a sneaky vacuum leak and another minor plumbing problem, I tried again... and then found that it runs beautifully when set at 22 degrees BTDC.
I took a little trip to Georgia last week, most of it using the cruise control set at 75 mph, and burned up most of a tank of gas. When I went to refill it, I'd gone 362 miles and it took 11.95 gallons of gas... or, to make the math simpler, 360 miles on 12 gallons, for a glorious 30 mpg. NICE!!! Engine idles smoothly, accelerates quickly, and will hold a stable 2/3 redzone boost level (adjusted wastegate actuator DOWN to this level!) when asked to do so. Boost onset (rise time) is quick. I'm one happy SPG9 customer.
If you get the AID, try it first at 20 degrees, then at 22, and see if you detect any differences. If you get any boost twitch (knock sensing) at 22, use 20. If not, leave it at 22. Let us know what you discover!
