Broken timing chain/bent valves

I have read most of the posts on timing/balance chain posts with interest as I offered to fix a dead 92 Saab 9000 cd turbo I had sold to a friend. It died enroute to his office and was towed to a local Saab dealer where it was determined it needed a motor (est $3500-$4000) He declined and had it towed to his house where we took a look at it. By visual observation the valve cover had a hole in it by the timing chain side. We removed the valve cover and no chain was visible. Pulling the timing cover we found the broken chain, a broken pivot guide, and bent crankshaft chain guide. The balance chain sprocket on the crank was very worn also. We pulled the head to see how many valves were bent to find that only two intake valves had made light contact with number one piston and they were not bent! I am writing because I thought it was automatic that if you broke a chain you had bent valves. It was interesting that the cams were at a position where all the valves were closed and wanted to stay in that position. Is this unusual?
