If you've got a bad O2 sensor, the engine will default to a richer condition. This makes sure the engine runs a little cooler and detonation is kept at bay.
However, the O2 sensor doesn't have that much control of fuel, so yes, you will be running rich, but NO, you won't be soaking the catalytic convertor with fuel. The cat can be damaged if you run raw fuel into it. There's a big difference between getting raw fuel into the cat and simply running a bit rich.
I would drive the car and not worry about destroying your cat or suddenly bursting into flames. I would get the car checked out as soon as possible. It may not be the O2 sensor - the car could be running rich (or lean) for other reasons and the O2 sensor gets the blame. The on-board diagnostics aren't that sophisticated. I would also plan on replacing the spark plugs afterwards, because if you're running rich, they'll be paritally fouled, and if you're running lean, they'll be a bit burnt.
Good luck!
