This is much easier with a helper--
There are two wires on the brake light switch. Touch them together, and the lights should come on. If they don't come on, the problem lies somewhere other than the switch.
The switch has a plunger. The plunger is pushed IN when your foot is off the brake, and that keeps the switch open. When you push on the brake pedal, the plunger is pushed out by a spring inside the switch, and this makes the connection between the two contacts and lights the brake lights. Make sure the plunger comes all the way out - the switch is adjustable, and it's possible that someone adjusted it in too close, and the plunger can't come all the way out. Similarly, if the switch is adjusted wrong, it may have been smashed by the brake pedal, and the plunger no longer comes out.
If you suspect the switch, remove the wires, and measure the resistance across the switch. It should be an open circuit when the plunger is pressed in (foot off the brake) and very low ohms (2 or 3 at most) when the plunger is out (foot on the brake). If not, replace the switch. It may only be a few months old, but that doesn't mean it isn't broken.
Good luck!
