'91 9000 w/slow start and worn battery between drives

I have a 1991 Saab 9000. About three weeks ago I had more than a thousand dollars of work done it, including a new alternator. I then drove it across the country, where it performed beautifully. That was a month ago.
About ten days ago, it suddenly started having a new problem: when I leave the car the battery seems to run down. I mean really down. It always starts slowly now... so slowly that nearby pedestrians stare at my car as it sounds as if it won't start... half a second between each crank. Also, there is no way I can sit in the car and listen to the radio or turn the light on and look at a map while not driving, because it REALLY runs the battery down. I've even come back to my car a couple of times and had the CODE code appear on my stereo, which is what happens when the battery goes dead. So far I've been lucky and haven't gotten stranded but I don't want to depend on my good luck for too much longer. So, I guess this boils down to two questions:
(1) Could this have anything to do with my new alternator?
(2) Any recommended course of action?
Thanks! I'm hoping it may be something simple I can do myself as I spent all my money fixing it for the drive back out to California.
