Oil in Coolant Question (long)

Went to look at a 95 CSE v6 auto 126k today, guy wants $6300. Says he's had the car about a year no service records, the original book has no service recorded... Large puddle of oil under car, body and interior in great shape. Hole in muffler. Coolant tank full of brown liquid, owner says he put stop leak in it because it's leaking coolant. When I unscrewed the cap the tank is full of oil, stuck my finger in it, no question it's oil. I tell the owner I don't even want to drive it, head gasket(s) must be gone, tell him I'll get back to him. On the way home my son and I are talking about it and I can not for the life of me figuer how so much oil could have gotten into the coolant. Any ideas? Could this be from a head gasket problem? There was a small amount of foam in the tank but mostly oil. The dipstick oil didn't appear white or foamy. When we replaced the head gasket on our 90 900s there was plenty of foaming in the collant but little oil. We had the idea that maybe some one added oil in the wrong place. Since the body is so nice on this car I'm wondering if it would be worth saving, (if I could get it cheap enough) Thanks in advance for your help
