I just bought my 92 with a blown head gasket and lots of oil in the overlow tank & foam in the crankcase. It was cheap enough so I figured, what the heck - a nice project car, esp. at only 110k.
So my mechanic & I get the head off (he lets me play in the garage weekends) figuring we'll just replace the gasket. No such luck. Previous owner seems to have never changed the coolant, cause the head passages were all eaten away, one just enough under the gasket to let the gasket collapse.
Long story short. Bought a used head for $275, slapped it on, changed oil a couple of times & it runs fine now. Course there were a million other little things wrong with it, but they're all fixed now, on the cheap.
So, sounds like if you like the car, get dealer's price on replacing the head, subtract it from fair value, discount the price more for the added hassle and for the risk of other unknowns and tell him, take it or leave it.
On the other hand, since you can't check for tranny probs if it's not driveable, that's a big risk. Not sure I'd do it again.
