I've used Gunk engine cleaner and a regular garden hose (low water flow) for years with good results. Get the engine warm (not hot), apply Gunk, use a small paint brush to loosen any tough-to-remove crud on the engine, then hose off carefully with very low water pressure. As has been mentioned, avoid electronic components, including the AIC valve (top-right firewall). I always wash down the DI unit thoroughly and have done this for many years without problems, so I can't imagine why it would be advisable to avoid it.

I would never use a high-pressure spray like at a car wash or, perish the thought, steam to clean an engine. Use either and you're asking for trouble.
