Anvil, there are two ways to eliminate the alt. from working, disconnect electrically or take the belt off for a very short few minutes as the water pump won't be rolling either. Your choice.
Without a battery in your car the alternator will run the car as it has the capacity to supply running load and replenish the batt from starting. But without the battery you loose the filtering ability (which is huge) of all those plates which help absorb the small ripple on top of the alternators DC output. A good mechanics shop will have an electrical system load analyzer which will look at alt's output amperage and voltage to see if all the diodes and windings are working. If there is one bad connection to the batt. on + or - lines it can isolate the batt from its solid low ohmic path to the car's system. Then you can get an increase in the ripple feeding thru to the audio system. A good digital meter will measure AC (ripple) on top of DC or any meter can measure it with a capacitor of proper size in line to block the DC and only pass the AC to the meter. See if ripple appears at the fuse block in the glove box if you can measure for it. It will allow you to see it as you drive around.
