Oh man, now what?

Took my beautiful Imola Red 93 CSE in for service and to have a squeak in the rear suspension checked/ fixed. The mechanic put the car on the lift and called me in to look; this is never good in my experience. Turns out my baby was in an accident prior to joining my family and that what was probably once a hairline crack in the rear frame has been attacked by salt and corrosion and will require some big-time body work. The rear section of the frame will have to be somehow cut out and reworked? I won't begin to understand the whole process, but the bottom line is that it's lots of money and lots of work. The car is nearly perfect in every other respect, with 230K on the odo but only 120 on the engine, everything working 100%, etc. I can't tell you how bummed I am over this. I'm waiting for an estimate, and suppose that if we're talking about $1000 or so I'll just do it rather than part with the car. I'll say this: NEVER would I have ever considered fixing ANY other car under these circumstances, I'd just chalk it up to bad experience and move on. I hope if I decide to opt for the surgery I'll be making the right decision.
